help your
neighbors.
When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'
— Mr. Rogers
The world could use more people like Mr. Rogers. This month, we're setting out to emulate his kindness and compassion by helping our neighbors, and we're inviting everyone to join us.
Here are some ideas to get you started in your own neighborhood.
Imagine what our real neighborhoods would be like if each of us offered, as a matter of course, just one kind word to another person.
— Mr. Rogers
1
say hi.
Most great friendships begin with one simple word.
2
bake cookies.
Whether you’re welcoming a new neighbor to town, thanking a friend for a favor, or just testing out a new recipe, a sweet surprise can make anyone’s day.
3
go for a walk.
Your neighborhood has it all: Fresh air. Exercise. Get to know your neighbors by getting to know your neighborhood.
4
exchange phone numbers.
It’s useful if you suddenly find yourself in a pickle – or just want to invite the whole neighborhood over for an impromptu barbecue.
5
walk your neighbor's dog.
Sometimes, a wagging tail is the best kind of "thank you."
6
throw a block party.
Nothing brings a community together like a big pot-luck dinner… or a serious grill-off.
7
offer to carpool.
Rideshare with your neighbor: it's good for the environment and you could make a new friend.
8
build a birdhouse.
Your feathered neighbors will love you for it.
9
offer a grocery run.
It’s a quick, thoughtful way to make life a little easier for an elderly neighbor, under-the-weather friend, or the super-busy mom next door.
10
thank your mailman
(or mailwoman).
A note only takes seconds, and it might make someone’s day.
11
write a letter.
Send a friend an unexpected note of appreciation, revive the lost art of the love letter, or write to your representatives about an important local issue.
12
plant something.
Make the neighborhood a little prettier and the air a little healthier at the same time.
13
get out and vote.
Now is the perfect time to make sure you’re registered and learn more about candidates. From local ballots to the national midterms, every vote offers the chance to make your neighborhood a better place.
14
stop and chat.
You never know what you might learn.
